CREATING VALUE IN OUR HOMES
Custom Home Builder Torquay
Torquay was for a very long time (since the 1860s) a favourite holiday destination for many family's who made the journey from Melbourne. Originally called Spring Creek it was renamed Torquay in 1892.
By 1910 the town had its first permanent primary school and continued to be a popular holiday location, which only increased with onset of cars in the 1920s. Many of the holiday houses of the time were nothing more than fibro shacks.
In 1946 the Torquay Life Saving Club was formed, it continues to be the oldest and largest club in Victoria. Torquay is synonymous with surfing, the first Bells Beach surf competition was held in 1961 and is now the world’s longest running surfing competition. Torquay was also made famous as the founding location for the world wide surf brands RipCurl and Quicksilver. RipCurl still has it’s head office in Torquay.
Much has changed in Torquay since it the 1920s when it started to see its first permanent residents. The 2021 census has Torquay’s population at 18,534 residents, this grew by 5,000 people since the 2016 census, Torquay is a fast growing town. Most of the old fibre shacks once on very large blocks have been knocked down and replaced with townhouses and apartments, fitting anything up to five on one block.
The town has seen a seismic shift in the type of architecture we are seeing, with a major push since 1990s towards contemporary architecture. This has seen an eclectic array of designs being built all over Torquay and Jan Juc, its neighbouring town. Derbyshire Homes has been proud to be the custom home builder of choice in Torquay and a small part of this movement.
